En 1983 firmó con Portrait Records y lanzó su primer álbum titulado "She's So Unusual" (Ella es tan inusual) que pretendía reafirmar la apariencia extravagante de la artista. Ese año el disco vendió 4,5 millones de copias en Estados Unidos. Fue el primer disco de una cantante que debuta en colocar 4 canciones en el top 5 de Billboard: "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop" y "All Through The Night".
Debido al éxito del disco recibió premios de la American Music Awards, Grammies, de la revista Rolling Stone y de MTV.
Siendo la artista de moda, fue llamada para que compusiera la banda sonora de la película "The Goonies" en 1985. "Good Enough" llegó a colocar en el Top 10. Un año más tarde demostró que lo estrafalario de su apariencia era una extensión de su creatividad. Ese año produjo el álbum "True Colors" en el que incluye artistas como Billy Joel, Nile Rodgers, Rick Derringer, Aimee Mann y las Bangles. La canción que le da nombre al disco le valió una nominación al Grammy.

En 1991 se casa con el actor David Thorton a quien conoció en la segunda película de su carrera un año antes. La boda fue bastante particular dado que Little Richard ayudó a que la pareja recitara sus votos (poco ortodoxos por cierto) y Patti Labelle cantó como tema de bodas "Come What May". Probablemente el amor le sirvió de inspiración, porque "Hat Full Of Stars" su siguiente disco fue el más aclamado por la crítrica, al punto que la revista Rolling Stone comentó que "su voz de multioctavas nunca había sonado mejor".
